Ünnepek, jeles napok multi-kulti családban

Ez a téma is a facebook-os csoportban került elő:

Ünnepeljük-e a nőnapot Íroszágban?

:) Természetesen jön a nyuszi is.
Karácsony estéjén pedig jön a Jézuska, másnap reggel pedig a Santa Claus. :)

This post is about how we celebrate holidays, birthdays and such in our multicultural family. :)
As it is very important to me that I still get to be as Hungarian as possible in my everyday life, I absolutely insist on Thomas and me speaking Hungarian whenever we can, and also to teach him about my culture just as much as about the Irish heritage. Fortunately he is a great little partner for this, he speaks his mother tongue nearly as well as his father tongue, which is his first language obviously. He is also well aware - on the level of a 4 year old at least - of the Hungarian culture and habits.
It is more difficult than many imagine, sometimes it really is hard work for me to keep myself focused and not to give in to the easier way: of course some things would be easier in English, of course some things are hard for him to understand, as they are not in his everyday life as they would be if he lived in Hungary. But I still want to do this for him and myself too: for me it is simply important, and for him it gives a plus that helps him keep a really unique and great relationship with my parents and our friends in Hungary. He really doesn't need to feel out of place when we are there, when we are out and about, most people don't even know he is fluent in another language and he does not permanently live in Hungary.

So here it is, what we celebrate - of course everything! Lucky for us, some holidays we have twice, and we also have all holidays that we wouldn't have in either Hungary or Ireland. :)

February - Valentine's Day and carneval - a sort of dress up feast in Hungary, especially for kids, to say goodbye to winder and to celebrate the coming of the spring. We would never forget Pancake Tuesday either. :)
March - International women's day, March 15 (National Day in Hungary), Paddy's Day, Irish Mother's Day, Derek + Kata Birthday
April - Easter (with egg hunt and all Hungarian things that are not known here)
May - Thomas Birthday, Hungarian Mother's Day, Children's Day
June - Father's Day (poor unlucky Derek, it falls on the same day here and in Hungary....)
August - on the 20th another Hungarian National Day - St. Stephen's Day and the celebration of the "new bread" - as in baked from the fresh wheat harvest, originally. I tend but try not to forget this one. :)
October - Halloween
November - Derek and Kata Nameday - Derek didn't have a nameday until he met me, but we saved him, and created one for him. :)
December - on the 6th St. Nicholas (a.k.a. Santa) hides small treats into the boots of good children in Hungary. He must know there is one little Hungarian in this house too. :) On the 21th - Thomas's Nameday. On the evening of 24th the Child Jesus (and/or the Angels) brings the presents in Hungary - and even here, if we are here. And on the 25th morning more presents from Santa! And then there is New Year's eve - ah well.... we don't do much with a small child...

I hope I didn't forget anything. :)
